This brought the windows back to my screen so I could close them.
I'm not sure why this external drive cause the problem, window vista should automatically install the proper driver for that.

Thus, for anybody having problems running stuff at startup, try disabling approval mode and tweaking the user account settings in the local security policy screen.

Once you can log onto Windows do so and at the desktop right click the mouse on the wallpaper (background) which will bring up the display settings box.
